Workarounds for Offering Payment Plans on Squarespace (Without Losing Your Mind)

One of the most common questions I hear from creatives selling services or digital products is:

“How do I offer payment plans on Squarespace?”

The short answer? Squarespace doesn’t natively support flexible payment plans (yet!)—but there are some solid workarounds you can start using today.

Here are 5 ways to offer payment plans on Squarespace (plus quick how-to steps to get you started):

1. Use Klarna or Afterpay via Stripe

If you’re selling digital products or templates, you can offer “buy now, pay later” options by connecting Klarna or Afterpay through Stripe.

How to do it:

  • Create a Stripe account (if you don’t have one already)

  • Apply to use Klarna or Afterpay through Stripe’s payment methods

  • Once approved, build a product checkout page using Stripe Checkout or a 3rd-party platform (like ThriveCart) that supports Klarna/Afterpay

  • Link the checkout page or embed a button on your Squarespace site

Best for: workshops, programs, products and digital offers

2. Use Squarespace’s Subscriptions (Commerce Advanced Plan)

Squarespace does have a built-in subscription feature—but it’s only available if you upgrade to the Commerce Advanced plan.

How to do it:

  • Upgrade to the Commerce Advanced plan

  • Go to Products > Add Product > Subscription

  • Set your recurring payment frequency (e.g., monthly or weekly)

  • Add your service or package details

  • Link this product to your services page or checkout button

Best for: ongoing services, product subscription offers, retainers, coaching packages

3. Use Member Areas for Subscription-Based Content

If you’re delivering digital content, classes, or behind-the-scenes exclusives, Member Areas are a great way to package and drip content while charging a recurring fee.

How to do it:

  • Add the Member Areas add-on in Squarespace

  • Create exclusive content pages for members

  • Set up your pricing (monthly or annual)

  • Link your Member Area to a landing or sales page

  • Promote it to your audience with clear access instructions

Best for: workshops, online courses, coaching libraries, digital communities

4. Use an External Checkout Tool (ThriveCart, SamCart, or Stripe Checkout)

For the most flexibility and automation, use a dedicated checkout platform outside Squarespace. You can still host your sales page on Squarespace and just send customers to an external checkout.

How to do it:

  • Create an account with ThriveCart, SamCart, or Stripe Checkout (this one is FREE - yay!)

  • Set up your product with multiple payment options (e.g., one-time or 2/3/4-payment plans)

  • Copy the checkout link or embed code

  • Add a “Buy Now” button on your Squarespace page that links to the external checkout

Best for: service packages, templates, offers that need payment plan flexibility or upsells

5. Set It Up Manually Using Accounting Software (like QuickBooks or Wave)

If you’re working with fewer clients or prefer a more hands-on approach, you can manually set up a payment plan using your accounting software.

How to do it:

  • Use QuickBooks, Wave, or FreshBooks to create a custom invoice

  • Break the total into instalments (e.g., 50/50 or 3-part payment)

  • Set recurring due dates and send automated reminders

  • Add your payment link or bank details for each invoice

  • Let your client know upfront what the payment schedule looks like

Best for: 1:1 services, custom projects, or when you want full control

So, what’s the best option for you?

  • 💻 Selling digital products? → Klarna/Afterpay or Stripe Checkout

  • 💼 Offering done-for-you services? → ThriveCart or Manual Setup

  • 💡 Running a coaching program or membership? → Member Areas or Subscriptions
